So it turns out that Death Cab For Cutie love referencing cityscapes.
I’m finding it best to do these paintings to things that are new to me or I haven’t yet heard and am excited to listen to. The painting to the left started out as a motorway with a bright red car motoring through it. That’s because I didn’t really know where to start until I got a rather unimaginiative vision from a lyric early on – “Noise – cars on the freeway” [as heard in 'Home is a Fire'].
The boy himself came out of ‘Some Boys’ – much stronger lyrically. A really great song [listen below].
I have a tendency to bring something new with every new track so it’s inevitable that the starting point is unrecognisable by the time all seven other tracks have gotten a spin. There was a door knob in what is now the sky at one stage too.
Anyway, the result is very much so a cityscape, with a boy singing his little heart out with a lyric taken from that first track – “Nothing is the same”. It’s not my favourite lyric at all from the album. In fact, it kind of annoys me. Don’t feed me a standard phrase. If nothing is the same, I want to know what’s changed since yesterday.
Cheers.
