Grimes – Genesis

Grimes // Genesis // as interpreted by RGBeats

I listened to a song by Montreal’s vocal sampling pixie, Grimes a lot last year. The song was Vanessa. So when my friend The Bubble Boy told me that she had a new track out, I diligently got my paints and started to listen to the new track called Genesis on repeat.

Fortunate enough to have seen Grimes play upstairs in Whelans last year, I was mesmerised by her vocals. I had just assumed that the vocals had some mad effects on them ahead of going to the gig. But no. Her voice is actually like that and she proceeded to sample it building up the perfect harmonies that she masterfully pieces together.

The minute I heard Genesis, it  reminded me of the lo-fi Scottish band Looper who were around in the 90s and early 00s. The opening is so like their song The Strangest Girl…another song I used to wear out the play button on.

I found it difficult to detach the image of a girl who looks no older than 14 full of innocence while I was painting this. I guess that could be where it gets its fairy-tale look from too.

The rectangles in the painting represent the pads on a sampler. Simple as that really!
